Suggested Itinerary
To fully enjoy the Tasman Peninsula-Port Arthur region you should allow at least two nights so you can see a little of where the world's best natural heritage meets an amazing cultural heritage - The Convict Trail.
This sample itinerary includes the "hidden treasure" of the Peninsula - the Historic Coal Mines at Saltwater River.
Day 1 From Hobart
Travel via Sorrell or Richmond to the Tasman Peninsula. At Eaglehawk Neck discover the Tesselated Pavement, Tasman Blowhole, Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen. Follow the convict trail through Taranna and Koonya before arriving at Saltwater River to explore the magnificient free entry Coal Mines Historic Site.
Overnight at accommodation of your choice.
Day 2 Port Arthur
Explore Tasmania's premier tourist attraction - Port Arthur. All entry passes are valid for two days and provide access to the interpretation centre, an introductory tour, and Cruise. We recommend lunch at the Eucalypt Cafe (opposite Port Arthur entry).
Overnight at accommodation of your choice.
Day 3 Waterfall Bay or Eco-Cruise
Before leaving the Peninsula, take road C338 at Eaglehawk Neck to its end at the Devil's Kitchen. Walk the magnificient coastal route to Waterfall Bay. The dramatic cliffs and swirling ocean waters make this an exciting coastal walk (1 - 1.5 hours return). Alternatively explore the spectacular coastline on the 3 hour eco-cruise. Experience whales, seals, albatross, dolphins, little penguins and more amazing marine wildlife.
